Pressed-Steel Door Replacement: What to Check Before Ordering

A pressed-steel door quote needs more than a width and height. Document the existing frame, hardware preparations, exposure and intended use so the replacement package can be reviewed as a complete opening.

For a service entrance, commercial corridor or shared building entrance, start with the problem you need to solve. Is the leaf damaged? Does the door bind? Is the frame corroded? Does the latch fail to engage? These observations help an installer assess the scope without assuming that a new door alone will resolve it.

Record the opening and its surroundings

Give each opening an identifier and use it on your photographs and schedule. Include both sides of the door, a wider view of the surrounding wall, the threshold and visible hardware. Record whether the opening is indoors, outdoors or sheltered. Note delivery restrictions, operating hours and whether the entrance must remain available during work.

Existing labels and drawings can help identify the assembly, but photographs are not a substitute for an on-site assessment. Leave labels intact and have final manufacturing measurements confirmed by the party responsible for ordering. A nominal door size does not establish the finished dimensions, clearances or hardware locations required for a replacement.

Decide whether the frame can stay

A retained frame needs to be suitable for the proposed leaf and its hardware. Ask the installer to assess alignment, condition, anchorage and preparations before committing to a door-only price. Explain any previous repairs, water entry or impact damage that may affect the decision.

Coordinate hardware and performance requirements

List the hinges, lock or exit hardware, closer, seals, threshold and any access-control connection. Mark each item as retained, replaced or awaiting assessment. Specify who is responsible for electrical coordination when powered hardware is involved.

Tell the supplier about any documented fire, acoustic, accessibility, security or weather requirements. Do not select an assembly from steel thickness or appearance alone. Ask the responsible project professional to confirm applicable requirements and have the supplier identify a suitable documented door, frame and hardware combination. Compare the complete installed scope

Request separate descriptions for supply, delivery, removal, installation, hardware adjustments, finishing and surrounding repairs. Confirm the proposed finish, who completes any site painting, the measurement approval process and how changes after approval are handled. Ask for the expected procurement sequence and a plan for keeping the property accessible during the work.
