Front Door Replacement: Plan the Entry as a Complete Opening

Replacing a front door involves the frame, threshold, hardware and surrounding finishes as well as the door itself. Start with photographs and the way you want the entrance to work.

Describe the existing entrance

Photograph the outside, inside, threshold and the full wall around the entrance. Include sidelights, a transom or a storm door in the scope description. Tell the estimator whether you want to retain the current opening size, change the appearance or replace a damaged frame. A door that sticks, leaks or does not latch needs an assessment before choosing a replacement leaf.

Compare complete packages

Ask the quote to identify the door material, frame, finish, glazing, lock, hinges, weather seals and threshold. List any existing keypad or connected lock you hope to reuse. Product compatibility and final measurements should be confirmed before ordering. A catalogue photograph does not show every item included in the installation price.

Plan the work around the entrance

Identify steps, a narrow walkway, interior flooring and trim that need protection. Discuss removal, disposal, wall repairs, painting and how the entrance will be secured while work is underway. If you want a wider entrance, include that request at the outset so the opening and surrounding construction can be assessed together.
