When temporary board-up may be appropriate
A broken entrance, damaged frame, shattered sidelight or failed window can leave a property exposed before permanent replacement materials are available. A board-up is a temporary measure intended to reduce unauthorized access and weather exposure while the permanent door, frame, glazing or window scope is assessed.
If there is an immediate threat to personal safety, active fire, suspected structural instability, exposed electrical equipment or a crime in progress, contact the appropriate emergency authority first. Do not approach broken glass or an unstable opening to take measurements.
Door openings
Door damage can involve the leaf, frame, hinges, closer, lock, panic hardware, access-control components, adjacent sidelight or the surrounding wall. Photos from a safe distance help determine whether the temporary closure can protect the opening without interfering with required emergency egress or occupied-building access.
Window and storefront openings
Window board-ups may involve punched windows, storefront glazing, sidelights or glazed entrance systems. The frame material, opening size, remaining glass and available fastening surfaces affect the temporary method. Permanent glass replacement is a separate scope that may require a glazing specialist.
Information to send
Provide the property address, site-contact name, opening type, approximate width and height, inside and outside photos, access instructions and any known requirements from the property manager or insurer. Only collect measurements when the area is safe.
Temporary work is not the permanent repair
Boarding does not restore a door or window assembly's original fire, acoustic, security, accessibility, weather or warranty performance. Permanent repair should be specified after the damaged leaf, frame, glass, hardware and surrounding construction have been reviewed.
